Chinese were born ... with an accumulated wisdom, a natural sophistication, an intelligent naivete, and unless they were transplanted too young, these qualities ripened in them.... If ever I am homesick for China, now that I am home in my own country, it is when I discover here no philosophy. Our people have opinions and creeds and prejudices and ideas but as yet no philosophy.

One thing I don't think you can ever say about america, "Aren't the Americans sophisticated."     No.   Even the educated and the rich who have access to sophistication choose to remain closed to it.  Yes, they may have the newest technologies, the most expensive taste but only to obtain power and social recognition.   It even seems as though the regular man shuns sophistication.  They view it as a corruption.  I will gladly be corrupted.

  • Most of our wealthy are asshats that had fortune handed down to them.  I've seen sophisticated Americans and they were the generation that fought in WWII and what part of the states? Midwest & Texas.

  • @BenelliMan - I concur. Some of the most cultured, sophisticated and intellectually curious people I know come from regions that have a reputation for having anything BUT such people. I've found that those who live in areas that are stereotyped as being "eggheaded" or "elitist" are often hiding their own stupidity and complete lack of intellectual curiosity behind a pretense of asshattery.

  • @BenelliMan - Although I do agree that the more sophisticated Americans are from the Midwest and Texas, most wealthy Americans are self-made. There is only a very small portion who had their wealth handed to them.

  • I currently wait tables for a living and let me tell you, Americans are far from sophisticated. It doesn't matter how little or how much somebody is coughing up to pay for their dinner, Americans are entitled and rude. Foreigners on the other hand, well, despite their reputation for being bad tipper, are the kindest people who take the time to say thank you and follow proper etiquette.

  • @QuantumStorm - @BenelliMan - First of all, BenelliMan, What did you do!  I have traffic!    Second, what caused this entry was my experiences with people in TX and AR.  Dallas in particular.  I'm going to agree with you about the generation, but I think the generation following has moved backwards.

@Baseballchik138 - entitled and rude are words I would use as well.

  • Its not something just isolated to america. Most advanced societies now have the cultural sophistication of rocks even here australia, I live out in the country here and I look around and struggle to see a definition between a human and the rocky, barren landscape I am surrounded by. Eastern Cultures always have had it over the west in that regard. Thanks for the observation about yanks...knew it already hehe. Cheers

  • @Teh_Redfoe - Cheers to you!  I'm glad to hear from someone outside my firing zone.
